Compatibility, 10 keys, continued
1) First of course we would compare the ascendants in the birth charts. The ascendant is the sign positioned on the cusp (leading edge) of the first house. (See article on Signs and Houses). The Ascendants is also referred to as the rising sign. Ascendant signs that are opposite the natural order of the horoscope (for example, Pisces and Virgo), suggest very different approaches to life; whereas signs in the ascendant position that are the same in both charts, suggest a very similar approach to life by both individuals.
2) The sun represents the most important influence in every birth chart. Determine the aspects (see article on angles), if any, between the Sun and Moon in each chart. The Sun aspecting the Moon, or the Moon aspecting the Sun (in the comparison horoscope) is an excellent indication of potential for harmony and happiness in a relationship.
3) The Sun conjunct, opposed, or square Venus (Sun in chart A, Venus in chart B), suggests friendship, admiration,as well as an appreciation of similar areas; fairness and respect are the possible outcomes of these aspects. The Sun is symbolic of life and Venus of harmony which would suggest an ideal relationship (if not negated by other negative influences).
4) Mars conjunct, square, or opposed Venus would also suggest a strong positive attraction. This also reflects a balance between the two different energies that these planets symbolize.
5) Take a very close look at Mercury (communication), Venus (harmony, emotions) and Mars (energy and action). Study these planets by house, sign and aspect. For example Mercury squared Mercury can suggest routine conflicts with opinions and issue positions, and excessive defensive behaviors expressed.
6) A comparison of signs and ruling planets in the ascendants and descendants (first and seventy house) in the birth charts can reflect the nature or possibility of a long lasting bond. For example: the ruling planet in the ascending sign or descending sign in one chart is also in the rising sign or descending of the second chart; ruling planet in the ascendant or descendant is in the same or opposite sign in the second chart.
7) Create a simple graph depicting the number of planets in each element by sign. Double the point value for rulers (Leo is ruled by the Sun, for example) in their matching signs. Once graphs are created for each chart compare the graphs to determine if the elements are balanced or closely balanced. Fire and Air are compatible as are Water and Earth. Take a look at the elements in each chart. The elements are defined as: Planets in Fire Signs: active, enthusiastic, motivating: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius; Earth: practical and cautious: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn Air: social and intellectual: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Water: emotional, sensitive: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Also if there is a lack in elemental balance in one chart that is satisfied in the second chart, usually the second suggests an individual with strengths that balance the first party.
8) Examine the position of Saturn in each birth chart by sign and house. Delineate (interprete) it’s effect in each chart and suggest potential difficulties or benefits arising from those positions. Saturn conjunct Saturn in the charts would be especially interesting. Depending on sign and house it could suggest a very similar approach to duties and responsibilities; or it might suggest compounding or exaggerated focus in a particular area and result in a great deal of anxiety.
9) Prepare and compare solar arc charts for both parties. Perhaps the birth charts suggest a great deal of future difficulties. Look at the solar arcs and analyse their impact. The natal charts may carry the weight of the study, but it is also important to discuss and consider how each individual may change with time. Examining their transit charts may offer a more realistic view of the individuals. How have they overcome the weaknesses or disabling elements of their past? How have they changed their perspective and approaches to life? Are the individuals wrapped in self-defense behaviors or have they learned to be accessible and take ownership of their behavior?
10) Finally a most vital consideration of the birth chart comparison is to keep in mind the perspective of the individuals involved. This is why a consultation is necessary. Ideally before construction the charts and beginning the comparison, it’s good to create a file on the individuals with their comments regarding personality, approaches to tasks and responsibility, personal comments regarding their upbringing and how they respond to stress, interests and ambitions. Following the construction of the birth chart and initial analysis, have a consultation by phone or in person asking for further input and insight from the couple involved or the person requesting the analysis.

Can Astrology Predict the Future:
forecasting tools
Secondary Progressions
Progressions work on the premise that each day following one’s date of birth represents one year in one’s life, thus the 28 day after birth would represent the 28 year. As a forecasting tool this method is “progressively” being seen as a helpful, but incomplete tool; although it has been used for ages. Astrologers today tend to prefer viewing the progressed chart as a reference to changes in perspective, or inner changes. And with that understanding the progressed chart seems to actually be quite accurate.
Transits
Transits are planets in current time. We compare their current position with the position they occupied in the birth chart, or moving to a position that creates an aspect with planets in the natal chart. An exact transit would be exactly at the same spot in current or future time as it was positioned at birth or within one degree of that position. Transits are cool, they represent external conditions and a good interpretation can be quite helpful. Looking forward to upcoming transits can be used as a planning tool. A transit seems to activate or bring life to a natal aspect.
Solar Returns and Lunar Returns
One each year the sun returns to the exact point it occupied at the time of birth. The solar return chart can be assessed to determine the conditions for the upcoming year. Intermediate points can also be utilized to reference influential times throughout the year.
Lunar Returns occur not annually but monthly. Some astrologers find that combining solar and lunar returns they can acquire a more detailed report for the upcoming year. Lunar cycles seem to be reflected in human behavior in many areas; and through the ages the position of the sun and moon have been used to determine the best time to plant, go to war, and many other daily human events. It is interesting to note that women are more likely to conceive when the sun-moon angle and their biological cycle align.
Solar Arc’s
I prefer using solar arc rather than progressions. I find that solar arcs consistently reflect the dynamics occurring in real time in an individuals life. Solar Arcs are based upon math similar to the math used for progressions. However, all the planets move forward in time the same equal number of degrees. Constructing a double ring chart with the natal on the inside and the solar arc’s on the outside is very telling and helpful for understanding current events and for strategic future planning.
Many types of forecast reports are offered today, the above mentioned astrology methods are most commonly and reliably used by astrologers today.
